Securing and maintaining a domain name is one of the basic steps in building your website. Here’s how the process works.

flow chart

Registration
The first step is to check if your desired domain name is still available. If no one else is currently using it, then you are allowed to claim it through a company such as Quape. Domain names registration is identical to getting a lease; you pay a fixed amount to own it for a given period.

Active Status (1-10 years)
A domain name can be registered with a choice from 1 to 10 years, depending on your domain names registration subscription. Within this period, the status of your domain name is considered active.

Expiration (1-29 days)
You will be notified when the registered period is nearing the end. If you pay the renewal fee, then the domain name remains active. The registered period after renewal is still 1 to 10 years.

If you don’t renew the registration, your domain will be detain. Those who attempt to access your website will be redirected to a page announcing that the domain has expired. You also will not be able to transfer your domain name to another registrar at that moment.

The expired status will last from 1 to 29 days for all of the domain names. You can still renew your domain within this period.

Redemption (30 days)
After the expired period has past, the domain will proceed into redemption period for 30 days, which still allows you to renew your registration, however the registry will charge a reinstatement fee to re-instate the domain name. The whole process of reinstatement is manual and takes about 1 working day to complete. Clients are advised to renew their domain before the expiry as this is definitely not a recommended method.

Pending Delete (5 days)
Your domain name at this stage is already about to be deleted from the registry and will no longer be restored. After deletion, it becomes available for registration again but you will now have to compete with others who might want to register it as well.
