In this article, you will learn about creating and adding a product category. You will also be taught about adding a parent and child category. Kindly be guided by the information below.
Add a new category
Step 1: Login to Joomla Admin panel.
Step 2: There are two ways to enter into the Product category page. Firstly, click on Components at the top admin panel, once a drop down menu appears, click VirtueMart > Product Categories. If not you can choose to click on VirtueMart at the top admin panel. After the drop down menu appears, click Product Categories.
Step 3: You will arrive at the Product Categories page. Click on +New to create and add a new category.
Step 4: You will be presented with a form of various field options. The following below show several crucial options available:
- - Category Name
- - Published options
- - Alias
- - Category Description
Step 5: Next, to add a category image (optional), simply click on the Image tab, under the Upload File section, select the Upload checkbox. Then, click on Browse to select a image from your local computer, and click Open. Your image has successfully been uploaded.
Step 6: Once done, there are two ways to save your category. Select Save, your changes will be saved and you will remain on this page. Select Save & Close, your changes will be saved and it closes this page. You will be directed to the Product Category list page. A display message will be shown to indicate that your category is successfully saved.
Add a new child category
What is a child and parent category? Basically, these terms are describing a relation between a main category (parent) and a subcategory (child). The steps for adding a child category is similar to a parent category. Note: You must have a parent category added, before creating a child category.
Step 1: Click on +New to create and add a new category.
Step 2: Enter the field options, similarly like you did for a parent category.
Step 3: Scroll down the page and under the Details section, locate Parent Category and select the parent category you wish to link. In this example, the Graphic T-shirts (child) will be linked and sub-categorized under T-shirts (parents).
Step 4: Similarly, you can add an image to a child category. The steps are identical as its parent category.
Step 5: Once you have filled in the form and uploaded an image, click on Save and remain on this page, or Save & Close and exit to the Product Categories list page.
Well done! You have added a child category to a parent category.
