Variable products are a product type in WooCommerce that allows you to offer a set of variations on a product, with various control over prices, stock, image and more for each variation. They are used for products like shirts, where you offer different in sizes and colors. This article will guide you to add a variable product in your WooCommerce. Kindly follow the instructions below.

 

Step 1: On the left panel, Click WooCommerce > Products > Add Products

Step 2: Click Variable product from the Product Data drop down.

Step 3: For Attributes, add attributes before creating variations. We recommend the use of global attributes as they can add more technical information to a product and assist visitors refine your catalog while browsing.

To use a Global attribute:

1. Choose one from the dropdown and click Add.

2. Choose Select all to add all attributes to the variable product (if applicable).

3. Tick the Used for variations checkbox to tell WooCommerce it’s for your variations.

4. Once completed, click Save Attributes.

To use a Custom Product Attribute:

1. Select Custom product attribute.

2. Name the attribute (e.g. Size),

3. Enter values separated by a vertical pipe.

4. Enable the Used for variations checkbox.

5. Click Save Attributes to save changes.

Step 4: Now, we will add variables. To add a variation, click on Variations at the Product Data panel.

1. Select Add variation from the drop down menu, then click Go.

2. Choose attributes you require for your variation. To edit additional data, simply click the triangle icon to expand the variation. You will notice the additional data being displayed under the attributes drop down. Do edit any available data. Note: the only required field is Regular Price.

To delete a variation, click Remove.

3. Click Save Changes.

Setting Defaults

We do recommend setting defaults that you prefer on variations. From the example, we set it to no defaults, thus your customers can pick any color and size right away from the product page.

If you want to pre-select a specific variation for the customers when they visit the product page, it is possible. This also enables the Add to Cart button to appear automatically on variable product pages.

Note: You can only set defaults after at least one variation has been created.

Adding image for variable

1. Click on Expand.

2. Next, click on the blue image icon to upload an image

3. Select the image you wish to upload/add.

4. Click Save Changes once completed.

Linking possible variations

This feature allow you to create every possible combination of variations. Select Create variations from all attributes.

For example, you have two attributes – color (with values yellow and green) and size (with values small and medium), it will create the following variations:

  • - Small Yellow
  • - Small Green
  • - Medium Yellow
  • - Medium Green
